Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch Days

Become a Vendor Sponsor an Event

June 24, 1889 the San Miguel Bank in Telluride was robbed by Matt Warner, Tom McCarty and Bob Parker more commonly known as Butch Cassidy. This was the first documented bank robbery for the infamous Butch and one that would be full of successes and learning opportunities for the meticulously planned heist. One of the many reasons Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch were so successful was Butch’s expansive understanding of horse flesh and preparing for fresh mounts in several places while eluding whatever tired out posse was on the chase. One of those planned stops happened right here in the Rangely Colorado area as they traded with White River Utes for fresh steeds as the Utes would’ve been here on their migratory path east to the upper river country for the summer.

Come visit Rangely Colorado, a place that still feels very much like the wild west. A place that was home to cattle and wild horses long before the town was incorporated. A place full of rich history that begs for an audience again.

Every second weekend in June we’ll honor the spirit of the west, the charisma of Butch Cassidy and the well-known Robin Hood like stories that have been passed down from generation to generation as so many of our families called these outlaws our friends.

Elzy Lay's Trading Post

June 7th - 9th, 2024

*TWO LOCATIONS*

10 Park Street Rangely, CO

2101 E Main Street Rangely, CO

Legend has it that Elzy held up another outlaw who had just robbed a wagon that was carrying merchandise. As luck would have it, the Brown's Hole group was planning a social event, even loading up Herb Bassett's piano up on a wagon to take to the barn. So Elzy took his stolen goods of fresh jeans and dresses for the ladies and sold them to his friends in Brown's Hole for the pending event.

The Trading Post will be in two locations to accommodate the different events. The first location will be right along Main Street and an extension of the events for Etta Place's Box Social, Butch Cassidy's Campfire, The Tall Texan's Two Steppin Street Dance and Charlie M. Russell's Western Art Show. The other location will be a little ways out of town at Columbine Park for the arena events. This will include Rash's Ropin, Sundance's Shoot-Out, Isam Dart's Dutch Oven Cook-Off, Kid Curry's Concert, News Carver's Cowboy Church and the Best of the West Showdown-Livestock Jackpot & Food Truck Showdown.

Charles Marion Russell, also known as C. M. Russell, Charlie Russell, and "Kid" Russell, was an American artist of the American Old West. He worked as a cowboy for a number of outfits, and documented the harsh winter of 1886–1887 in a number of watercolors. Russell was working on the O-H Ranch in the Judith Basin of Central Montana at the time when the ranch foreman received a letter from the owner, asking how the cattle herd had weathered the winter. In reply, the foreman sent a postcard-sized watercolor that Russell had painted of a gaunt steer being watched by wolves under a gray winter sky. The ranch owner showed the postcard to friends and business acquaintances, and eventually displayed it in a shop window in Helena, Montana. After this, the artist began to receive commissions for new work. Russell's caption on the sketch, Waiting for a Chinook, became the title of the watercolor. Russell later painted a more detailed version of the scene which became one of his best-known works.

June 7th, 2024 at 8:30 PM

Rangely Automotive Museum Parking Lot - 128 S Stanolind Ave Rangely, CO.

Ben Kilpatrick was described as being 6 feet, 2 inches tall, which led to the nickname "The Tall Texan." He was light-complected with pale yellow eyes, each of which had a violet spot in it. Along the way, he developed excellent shooting skills and was considered "absolutely fearless."

Barn dances were the social highlight of this area and neighbors from all around would attend. Everyone would load the kids and family up in the wagon and come from miles around. They would bring casseroles and the whole family planned to spend the evening and night. The babies were wrapped up in blankets and placed along the walls of the barn while their parents were dancing and the younger kids were put to bed in the wagon, falling asleep underneath the stars.

The dance will feature winner of the 2023 Vernal Country Show Down, Rowdy Rosendahl.

Isam Dart's Dutch Oven Cook-Off

June 8th, 2024 - Judging at 6:30 PM

Columbine Park - 2101 E Main St Rangely, CO.

While working for the Bassetts, Dart was a ranch hand who also cooked meals, washed laundry, cut wood, and performed other household duties.

Elizabeth Bassett was believed to be the mastermind of a group of cattle thieves, a group that included Dart. Dart was fond of children and babysat the children of Josie Bassett and her husband Jim McKnight. He played the harmonica and fiddle. Dart sang for the children, put on shows for them, and taught them how to ride and rope.

Dart was accomplished and considered a skilled bronco buster and a "top hand among cowboys". Joe Davenport, his friend, stated in 1929 that "I have seen all the great riders. But for all-around skill as a cowman, Isam Dart was unexcelled and I never saw his peer".

Isam was well-liked in Brown’s Park and known as a “top hand among cowboys” and an expert bronco buster. He was an accomplished and well-respected African-American thriving among a nearly 100% white population in an era that was frequently hostile to African Americans.

In 1900, a man by the name of “Tom Hicks” began working as a hand for Mat Rash. After a few months, Mr. Hicks simply vanished. Then, on July 8th, 1900, Mat was shot dead in his cabin. On October 3, 1900, Isam met the same fate while walking to his corral.

It was later declared that the mysterious “Tom Hicks” was none other than infamous gun-for-hire, Tom Horn. All evidence suggests that he was hired by large cattle barons to enter Brown’s Park to gather evidence of rustling… and then put an end to it.
